Betty Amundson

Betty Amundson

Betty wanted to live to be 100 and she did! She turned 100 on August 18, 2015. For her 100th birthday a few of her relatives traveled from North Dakota to throw her a party. It was a very special day for Betty, especially as she had not seen some of these relative in over 30 years. After living a full and rich life Betty passed away unexpectedly and peacefully a few months later on Christmas Day.

The only child of Bert and Myrtle Henry was born in Seattle, Washington and moved to Portland as a child. She attended Lincoln High School and began studies in Business Administration at Oregon State University only to be moved with the school of Business to the University of Oregon from with she graduated with a B.S. degree.

Betty became a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority of which she continued to support her adult life. After graduation she worked as a collection specialist for local businesses and was where she met the love of her life, Orin Amundson who was one of the principal owners of Shaw Surgical Supplies.

Betty and Orin were longtime residents of Tigard. As a young girl Betty especially enjoyed spending summers at the Oregon coast, so it was wonderful that later in her married life she and Orin were able to have a vacation home on the coast.

In addition to enjoying spending time at the beach she also enjoyed gardening, cooking and traveling with her husband. Upon the death of her beloved husband in 1986, she moved to retirement community and enjoyed playing Bingo, working cross word puzzles, watching sports on TV and visiting with her friends.

In 1972 a new shopping mall was being built in Washington County and the developers were conducting a contest for a name. Betty entered the contest and won by submitting the name "Washington Square".

Betty generously remembered family members and other organizations, including OPB, in her estate plan, specifically the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, St. Mathews Lutheran Church and the Oregon Symphony.
